In 2015, the Abington Township Board of Commissioners consists of 15 individuals who meet twice per month to discuss and adopt policies on issues such as land development, capital improvement projects, road improvements, refuse, and public safety. A more comprehensive governing structure was not adopted until the early 20th century, after an 1899 state law made it possible for Abington to re-classify itself as a "first class township." Abington's first Board of Commissioners meeting was held on Main the Weldon Hotel. Early government of the township was minimal: its earliest governing officials were supervisors of roads beginning in 1802, two township supervisors were annually elected. Abington Township, incorporated in 1704, is one of the oldest communities in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
